WHY DO I NEED AN IMPORT/EXPORT PERMIT?

If you are planning on bringing goods into the country from overseas or if you are planning on exporting goods out of the country, you are firstly required to register as an importer/exporter with the South African Revenue Service (SARS) and then apply to the International Trade Administration Commission (ITAC) for an import/export permit.

An import/export permit ensures that the products you intend importing/exporting, conform to the safety, quality, environmental and health requirements of the country. They must also comply with the provisions of international trade agreements as entered into between South Africa and other favourable trade partners.

WHAT ARE THE IMPLICATIONS IF I DO NOT HAVE AN IMPORT/EXPORT PERMIT?

Your goods may be confiscated/delayed by customs officials at entry/exit border points until such time as you can furnish the designated officials with valid proof that you are vetted to import/export goods into/out of the country.

This non compliance may lead to unforeseen delays/storage fees being incurred
